how a indian kid from virginia changed the world
by dipankar mukherjee on Nov 13, 2006 06:22 AM

The now infamous "macaca" incident was the beginning of the end for the incumbent senator and presidential hopeful George Allen from Virginia. That momentary indiscretion of a seasoned politician in adressing S.R.Siddarth a Virginia resident of Indian origin, led to a series of missteps culminating in a crucial loss of the senate seat to James Webb. With this seat the Democrats became the majority party in the senate by 1 vote. They now control both the house and the senate, and therefore will influence in no small way the national agenda and foreign policy.
Donald Rumsfeld the defense secretary has been the first victim of this change in leadership and the Iraq policy is under serious review.
The power of the media and the significance of every individual in this great democracy that we call America became apparent.
