change of name
by Dr. Radha Vasan on Dec 15, 2006 12:27 PM

India is a 'secular' state. Like it or not, English is our language, and we should be grateful for it because we are now able to converse and make ourselves understand to the western world. We cannot be within ourselves only, like an ostrich with its head in the sand, while the world around us is going forward.
Names of States and cities, whether anglicized or not, are beautiful sounding as they are. Madras had such a glorious lovely flavour to it, 'chennai' has spoiled the image of it. Its ok to have 'chennai' in the vernacular, but not as its official name. If you want to make our country a big village, then why do the politicians go 'abroad' to get international people to invest in our country? Stay in the country. DOnt look for foreign investments.
Bangalore has such a style to it, such class to it. Bangalooru sounds as if somebody is in torture!
Please dont lets change names as a political gimmick. If you want to go back to the 14 century, you go back with your family, keep them in shackles for all the world cares, but dont demean beautiful names in the 'name' of culture.
