Bangalore or Bangalooru?
by Satyaki Kanjilal on Nov 01, 2006 05:27 PM

To change name from Bangalore to Bangalooru is no doubt a novel attempt to erase our memory of our colonial past. Calcutta was changed to Kolkata, Bombay was changed to Mumbai and Madras was changed to Chennai. So why not Bangalore to Bangalooru ,alongwith Mysuru from Mysore, Mangalooru from Mangalore, Shivamogga from Shimoga, Tumakuru from Tumkur, Kolara from Kolar, Haasana from Hassan, Rayachuru from Raichur and Belagavi from Belgaum? What can be a better way to pay respect to U R Ananth Murthy ? However, the question will this really erase our slavish attitude? After, almost two centuries of British "Raj", is this sort of gimick going to work? What good would it serve to appropriate names of places and be slaves to the modern counterparts of our erstwhile colonial powers i.e. NEOCOLONIAL MULTINATIONALS ?
