RE:10 things I hate about India
by Ved Vedamanikam on Jun 30, 2006 12:51 AM

Mr. Bardhwaj:

Thank you for your feedack.

The Indian (and South Asian) obsession with cricket is extremely unhealthy for the sporting health of the nation. Let me elaborate. This obsession has resulted in the neglect of all other sports, as most funding are channelled into this stupid game. Is it any coincidence then that India, a nation of 1.1 billion produces no medals in the Olympics - a national disgrace. Of course, cricket is not entirely to blame.

Cricket was started in England by a bunch of lazy, out-of-shape aristocrats, and it was introduced to their colonies. Notice, that cricket is only the third or fourth rung sport in England, Australia etc. Only in South Asia has cricket the primary spot. And we are not even # 1 in this sport, and we do not even have a real pace bowler (>90 mph)! The higher castes have promoted the game, because it involved no person-to-person contact.

There is so much talent in India for soccer, field hockey, track & field, tennis, swimming etc. Let us pump the funds into these sports in terms of infrastructure, coaching etc., and dump this stupid game of cricket.

Incidentally, I am not a fan of American football.
