All parties need to look within
by Aashish Gupta on Jul 15, 2006 12:56 AM

While I agree with the comments of most people interviewed here (Muslims are harassed by the police, people are biased, etc.), the only solution to this -- and any other conflict -- is for all parties to stop blaming others and to look within.

So the people of Mumbai need to stop blaming the general Muslim population for any and all terrorism. Media needs to be less biased. But what about what the Muslim community needs to do to reciprocate?

1. Stop sending your kids to Madrassas. Send them to mainstream schools where they can interact with students from other communities. Other kids will know them better. And everyone will understand each other better. This does not mean your kids should not be taught about their heritage -- sure, send them to Sunday Koran classes (like Bible school, Chinmaya Mission's Balavihar, etc.). But not at the cost of interacting with the mainstream.

2. Stop living in your ghettos. Move out into neutral neighborhoods.

3. Don't make your religion your primary identity. Remember that you are a human being first, and Indian next and only then a Muslim/Hindu/Christian...

Look within.
