Our Legal and Police system do not inspire confidence
by George on Feb 22, 2006 05:26 PM

When I read about the manner in which the culprits in the Jessica Lal murder case managed to get away, it reiterated the fact that our Judicial and Police have lost the confidence of the people of India, as they are unable to maintain law and order. We have only our votes to change the people in power, to people with a strong desire to uphold the laws of our country.
Our country's freedom movement saved us from the British Raj, but in its place we as voters have brought back the princely state system where we regularly vote for and put into positions of power, the descendants of a political leader, making them believe they have a divine right to be above the law. I only hope education will dispel this myth from the minds of the voting masses.
I hope people with a conscience will question this judgement, or powerless people, seeking justice will be forced to resort to taking law into their own hands out of desperation. We have seen it already happen in the case in a Nagpur court, and in the way people immediately lynch criminals and dacoits instead of letting them slip through the huge gaps in our judicial and Police sytem.
