I really feel sorry for what happened. One thing that struck me is that the family should have contacted the U.S. embassy. Since the kids are U.S. citizens they would have taken it in their interest to make sure the request for wait until the documents arrived is granted. They go to real high levels to protect their citizens whoever it may be, especially if they are in a foreign country. Certainly something the Indian immigration officers can learn from.
