reservations...why no to them always?
by Amit Nagarkar on May 05, 2011 10:55 AM

it feels disappointing to know from young generation how strongly they are against reservation for the SC and ST communities in India. It seems they are unaware of the reasons why it was implemented to begin with. It had nothing to do with the financial status or economical background of the person. It was a positive step to bring about social equality in all sectors of society. Education being the most affluent part needs reservation first. It sounds disgusting to see equating it to Bollywood and cricket. Reservation ensured that the SC and ST secure their seats in respective sectors and that the shrewd among the upper castes do not refrain them of their rights as they did for years in the past. Whether reservations should be stopped? or When would reservations come to an end? should be a question to be answered by the ones who are reserved and not by the ones who feel they are giving reservation as alms. Reservation for the SC and ST is not a previelege but a right. It is for this reason that developed countries like the US still have reservations for the minorities and blacks. If a upper class candidate feels deprived of his opportunity to a seat in higher education only because a SC or ST candidate gets it for a lower score, he may surely CONVERT himself to a lower caste in the Hindu society for the rest of his life, get it certified by the court and may secure the seat. That is another way it can be done.
