Vande Maataram is a patriotic song in praise of India, our motherland. Its a description of the beauty, prosperity, boutifulness of our land and is an offering of salutations to the motherland. We see scores of people from different religions living in the US taking US citizenship daily - none of them question or refuse to learn the national anthem of the US (Jana Gana Mana or Vande Maataram our equivalents) or sing it when the occasion demands. They may not know it thoroughly but to my knowledge none of them complain that the anthem is against their religion or beliefs and use these grounds as a reason to not learn it or sing it - including Hindus, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs, Bahai, Parsis, Buddhists. Contrast this with our country, which is also the home of many practising religions and cultures - why should we put up resistance to knowing and singing our national anthem or Vande Maataram. We have something to learn from the US is all one can say.
