Respect 'Vande Mataram'
by Anita Sharma on Sep 01, 2006 08:01 AM

I am an NRI, born in UK, living in the USA .. someone who has been exposed to westernization but growing up with my Indian values.Yes, I would be glued to MTV channels while I was a teenager, eat Italian spagetti and chill with a coke . So what does Vande Mataram mean to me? Well honestly, it is the first patriotic song that was taught by my grandmother and even if I cant recollect the entire song, the tune haunts me. The song is the essence of the Indian freedom stuggle, the freedom that our generation takes up so casually. I might be living three quarters of my life abroad but that song reminds me who I really am. It reminds me that I am INDIAN!
Even 'Jaana Gaana Maana' doesnt evoke the passion that the mighty lyrics this song expresses.
We should honor the spirit of our ancestors who sacrified their lives and uplift this anthem no matter how those petty politicians or self-centered religious organizations pull it down.
Common Indians, stand up for your country and NOT FEAR!
Vande Mataram!
