Interview with Amartya Sen
by Lakshmi Jayaram on Aug 18, 2006 11:59 PM

Mr.Sen,
I sincerely respect your views and appreciate your efforts. It is not appropriate to call Hindu rioteers or Muslim rioteers. For it is not the religion or its philosophies which are a problem, but it is the gross misunderstanding of the philosophy by a group of people. The group could be 1 million, but please remember our country's population is 1 billion. What we need to address is the area where all of us misunderstand the basic understanding about ourselves and the world. This world is indeed complex, and we have to do an objective study of everything without passing our judgement too soon. The best I know of is the Advaita philosophy which is the closest for an intellectual mind. How much effort do we take to build an integrated society ? There is so much rift within families, where to talk of National Level integrity. So we need to start addressing solving these problems by discussing with people, who are capable of making the change. All religions fundamentally preach the same, somewhere someone screwed up the material for personal gains or due to misunderstanding. But if we are determined to understand the truth as Gandhiji did, we are sure to succeed.
Lakshmi
