A belligrent nation & a sahib
by Dinkar Koppikar on Aug 11, 2006 02:41 AM

You must realise Mr. Vijay that British could rule a nation of 300 million with only one lakh or so soldiers and administrators because they had a plentiful supply of obsequious brown sahibs from amongst us who were overawed by British power. While the struugle for independence produced patriotic and upright Indians they exceeded brown sahibs only marginally at the time of independence, but the latter held the resources and levers of power to rule the nation after independence. Brown sahibs are to be found in all parties. They lack confidence in the nation and in moments of crisis try to hold it back. Compare the conduct of our politicians and bureaucrats with their counter part in China in varous crises faced by our nations during the last sixty years. When the leaders of other nations visit India they fool us by flattering and we are too hungry for that flattery, but in a crunch we give in. That has been our story for the last two hundred years. Things have not improved after independence.
