Tolerance

You are right, mumbaikers need to change their mindset, but first you got to change yours.
You said you have a rule, not to live in hindu locality. You broke that rule just because you cannot afford a house in the 'upscale muslim' locality. Probably the hindu there also had a similar bad experience or doesn't want any riots to occur in the future. He has not got a chance to break his rule, because there are hindu buyers.
By the way, joining the mainstream as an Indian doesnt mean living in an 'upscale hindu or muslim locality'. It is a true feeling from within, that you are an Indian by virtue of birth and blood. No one one could ever stop you joining 'mainstream India' if that feeling is sincere enough. And when that feeling is sincere, there are no complaints about your country, there are complaints only about issues. Every culture, region and nation has its drawbacks, you should try to change those, but should never disown it.
Hindu-muslim riots is a very sad part, a black mark on all of us, but how about the sunni-shia riots that happen so periodically? Didnt you think of a new rule to live only in an 'upscale shia/ sunni locality'and joining muslim mainstream? Sincerity!!
