Development prism
by N J Ramesh on Jul 23, 2005 05:19 AM

This freeing up of civilian nuclear power generation from the curtails imposed by strategic considerations to purely economic and developmental needs is a very welcome step and if backed up with a legal framework which permits transparent private participation, both domestic and foreign, would definitely add one and may be even 2 percentage points to our current 6 percent growth rate.

This signaling of trust would open up other high tech sectors hemmed by strategic calculations, including semiconductor chips, aviation and ship building sectors.

Such steps get initiated because of complex factors and may be it is appropriate to view the new agreement as a logical step towards a safer legal world. This deal would be safe and legal, only if it does not constrain Indias non-alignment policy.
