Media hypes calamities...
by Chinmoy on Aug 02, 2005 03:42 PM

For the past week or so I've been listening to interviews and reports on the TV about this cloud burst. The media has a tendency to hype things out of proportion. How? I'll give you 2 exapmples - My fiancee lives in Goregaon, Mumbai. She's been able to commute to work (Malad) and back throughout this rainfall. TV reports say Goregaon was severly affected. Not totally true. The point is that the media is shows only the worst parts of the city. There are areas in the city that are safe, these never figure in the reports.

A live coverage on NDTV showed a place in Santa Cruz where the water was reaching the wheel tops of vehicles. And the reporter caused panic by stating that the entire area was flooded. On the same screen during the report we could all see the road right next to the said road was water free and traffic was normal. On the same road it was only a portion of about 20 feet that had water, the rest of the road was clear. TV channels please refrain from broadcasting such reports which increase the panic in the city already reeling. Give hope along with the truth.

Please try to give some hope to the people alongwith the truth. It's not only about the TV ratings.
