RE:Nuclear Deal
by ravi prakash on Jul 14, 2008 11:57 AM

I agree. India has not signed the NPT saying that it is discriminatory. India claims to be a non proliferator by having its own moratorium on further nuclear testing. But India, seeks to reserve the option of nuclear testing at our own will.
We have chosen the particular corner to anchor our foreign policy and international relations. The big question is: Is it serving any useful purpose? The answer seems to be NO since:
The reading of India's position by the Superpowers has been to deny the status of a nuclear weapon state to India thereby attracting the stamp of a proliferator of nuclear weapons.
Contrast the same with Iran. It signed the NPT, but pursues a nuclear weapons programmes and may even test its missile capability- all warlike acts. Even better is Pakistan, a complete nuclear proliferator who subscribes to no international norms and merrily tests missiles and even nuclear bombs.
Korea has also signed the NPT and pursues a nuclear weapons programme and what about China that has been stockpiling nuclear missiles in complete disregard of International norms.
In our corner we stand alone completely vulnerable to a joint diplomatic initiative by the Allies who dominate nuclear technology, weapon research, nuclear fuel and incidentally civilian nuclear power generation.
The cost of the deal is going to be enormous.
45 nuclear power generating stations, and Rs 10/ unit at the grid. This could mean around Rs 12 or 15 /unit for the consumer.
