Chiranjeevi's entry into politics
by Venkatachalam Subramanian on Aug 18, 2008 02:46 PM

The thespian's grand entry marked by some chivalrous remarks is a portent of things to come. His declaration that he will fight hunger and poverty is the normal and oft repeated recourse of all new entrants. Other than NTR and MGR, no other politician after 1970 has sincerely tried to do something and that includes Prime Ministers like Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, VP Singh, Vajpayee, PV Narasimha Rao & Manmohan Singh.

For all the bravado that Chiranjeevi depicted on his films about casteism and the rich-poor divide, he was surpirsingly tough on his own daughter when she reportedly eloped with a SW engineer a couple of years ago. He and his relatives went out of their way to break the marriage amidst a blitz of media gaze. It is rather surprising that a man who came from humble background to become stinking rich should develop a cynical attitude towards someone perceived to be poor (his son-in-law). Such people may be indulging in a publicity stunt. A contradiction of sorts. Only time will tell.
