If I were you, I would have told them that Rama was wisest of all, and he asked Seeta to cross the ordeal because he didnt want any body to raise questions about it. He is God, he knew everything, but for human eyes and mind, proof was needed.. He asked Seeta to go to jungle because he himself was cursed by a sage that he will have to live away from his wife.
