Indian cinema is not about Bollywood
by Cinemalover on Jun 16, 2006 12:23 AM

First of all, Bollywood by itself doesn\\\'t make Indian cinema. This is a common misnomer, and if you want to really showcase the strengths of Indian cinema, there are some wonderful movies made in Bengal and Malayalam. First, we can never dream of making the big budget extravaganza that Hollywood produces because they have such a big market. Second, songs and dances are a part of Indian culture so that is totally a unique realm and a different field to debate about. In terms of \\\'quality\\\' of movies, India has produced movies that match up to Hollywood standards. Watch the movies made by Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegal, K. Vishvanath, Manirathnam, Bala, Adoor Gopalakrishnan et. al and then you will understand what I talk about. If you don\\\'t, then \\\'Ignorance is bliss!\\\'
