Not the first real Portmanteau film!
by Ajith Kumar on May 01, 2006 04:34 AM

It's a shame that in India where we produce about 1100 films a year, people are only aware of Hindi movies. There are a lot of good movies made elsewhere in the country as well & not just in Hindi. I would say that DMH is not the first Portmanteau film in India.

This was achieved over a decade back with "Manichitrathazhu" (1994), an excellent Malayalam movie which had Fazil as the main director and directors like Sibi Malayil, Priyadarshan, Siddique and Lal doing portions of the movie. It was a great movie that is still interesting if you watch it today.

I am not a professional critic or a movie historian but an ardent fan of good, meaningful cinema (& hence don't bother to watch Bollywood junk). I might be wrong in saying that "Manichitrathazhu" is the first one but am definitely right in saying that DMH is not the first. It is time that India wakes up to the fact that there are better things beyond Bollywood & Hindi movies.

Cheers,

Ajith.
