I remember reading in my physics class that if you drop something into a tunnel that goes through the earth, the object starts to execute simple harmonic motion: a = -kx^2
where a = acceleration due to gravity (due to earth through which the tunnel was dug) x = distance from the core of the earth k = a positive constant
