Ask any Chinese, Japanese, or Korean if, given choice, he or she would choose to work and live in India, which is akin to being handled the death sentence. This theme has been conveyed to the public time and again in Japanese and Korean soap operas. Why, there are millions of reasons, one of them being that Indian cities are just big garbage dumps with NOT drinkable water.
The westerners like visiting India for two reasons. One is that India used to be ruled by the Brits and spending a few days in the old colony brings back fond memories. The other is that India is so backward that visiting the country and seeing the apparent poverty make those backpackers feel really good about themselves.
