Reservations- a political boon turning societal bane!
by Chakravarthy Muralidhar on Apr 10, 2008 11:21 AM

All the debate on Northie verses MNS has only been used to air rhetorics such as "Mumbai is for all Indians", "Any Indian can go anywhere, earn his living anywhere, acquire property anywhere", "Maharashtra is not for Marathis exclusively", etc, etc. In fact the debates on the mass media were not only immature and banal but almost always useless.

What the TV anchors, so-called eminent personalities and even the politicians and govt mandarins who appeared in these debates missed entirely was to seek reasons why such exodus and mass emigration from states such as UP,Bihar,MP,W.Bengal,etc., on the scale of locust infestation to Western and southern parts of India taking place? Is it merely the ease of mobility offered by good road, rail and air transportation that is the catalyst? Or is it the decay and ultimately crumbling of social and economic drivers in these states caused by an incapable, unethical and even criminal political and administrative class which has usurped power and pelf uniterruptedly for many decades? Obviously,it is a very sensitive and incindiary subject and none of the debaters wanted to even refer to it. They were happy bleeting rhetorics and expressing support to the 'victims'.

Ultimately, the solution lies in halting social decay, reviving serious economic activity and establishing law, order and dispencing justice effectively in these decaying states which will stem emigration. Such subjugation of one region by others is not acceptable even in Europe
