Golden Bird??
by Raj Khalid on May 22, 2007 10:27 AM

Sure India is a great booming economy and the Golden Bird will fly but in all the euphoria let us not forget that we are all prisoners in this golden cage. The day to day life of citizens, businesspersons, traders and tax payers is sheer hell. Each and every Govt rule and law is designed to be bypassed by the corrupt and to make life sheer hell for the honest citizen. In Mumbai you cannot even add a box grill on your window without attracting the BMC's ire yet, each and every restaurant in Mumbai has encroached on open space, added illegal extensions. None of these are taxed on the actual space occupied. If they we made to pay the correct tax all of us would be spared the tax on our own property. The loss of revenue across the city would fund the all the infrastructure projects we need to improve Mumbai. Filing IT returns is a nightmare, the Fin Min wants to hound the existing tax payers yet turns a blind to reform within the customs and excise departments. The honest citizens must break out of the golden cage.
