I always thought that the only sensible alternative to drawing water from aquifiers was desalination.
There is, however, another significant resource. Humidity in the atmosphere. Systems currently available in Chennai convert humidity to WHO level approved drinking water - as much as 28 liters a day.
I think an investment in a larger system can help provide for all needs in an apartment complex - without tapping into ground water at all.
