Chemical coating for enhancing the life of perishable fruits

I wish to know whether this chemical has been tested for ill-effects on edibles as carcinogenic in nature or inducing slow poisoning into our system by consumption of such fruits perserved by this process. The idea certainly sounds fine and helps in saving a potential damage of fruit and vegetable produce of a substantial value.
