What 1947 was like?
by on Aug 16, 2007 10:04 AM

I would agree if the writer says there are very BIG problems in India's path. But a comparison with 1947?
As told by my village elders, in 1947 only zamindars had enough "grains" to eat. Others mostly lived on rice bran and others. Even the rich bought new clothes on festive occasions. A literate person was respected in the entire village (so low was literacy). More than 100,000 people were killed during partition riots. hundreds of people got killed in 1 year due to plague. about half of the infants used to die within 1 year due to Tetanus (my granny had 12 children, only 4 survived beyond 5). In 1943, 1.5 million people died in Bengal out of hunger (HUNGER).
So don't say could we have been worse in 1947...
