Readerspeak: 'We are more racist than Americans'
by Nirpinder Singh on Mar 11, 2008 10:15 PM

I think that the title of this article is an apt description of the state of affairs in India. In the US there might be three main races white black and chicano. In India we have hundreds. They have prohibited racism by Law and they are willing to prosecute offenders. We have laws that are not adhered to. In my personal experience no place in the US was frightening or particularly dangerous if one understood the people there. I have been to Texas and California and to major cities elsewhere. No where did I feel threatened. It does matter how well you are able to get along there. When in Rome do as the Romans do. Learn the culture the accent appreciate the food (it is very good) and make friends not enemies. Do not invent your own version of discrimination. I know Indians there who speak badly about black persons as if they are themselves elevated to a higher position by doing so. That sort of behaviour is false and merely shows our prejudices carried over from home.
