Ragging is a way by which seniors show off their power by humiliating juniors. It is just a convenient way for them to display their sadistic and pervert nature. The harassed juniors often support the seniors because of Stockholm syndrome, and often because they want to practice it themselves. One doesn't need to rag in order to get friendly with juniors. It is only a hypothetical barrier: "If you don't get ragged, we won't help you."
