You'll never get rid of the caste system by considering it as a basis for reservation. Affirmative action for education makes sense based on 2 criteria - children whose parents never went to school/college and those that cannot afford 2 meals a day. The fundamental issue is that India doesn't want to get rid of the caste system - the people, policies and government have not made a conscious effort to get rid of the system. When nobody wants to get rid of castes, these problems will never go away.
