u mentioned abt the stuffs like Ovaltine/Bournvita to be used with skimmed milk, these contain large amounts of sugar themselves,may of these stuff that pass as health foods are loaded with simple carbs. how many know that the corn fakes have higher glycemic index that sugar!! normally i would preffer to keep off anything processed. the cardio u have suggested may be ok initially to get used to, but for any fat burning effect it may be inadequate. a light resistance training is not out of place, rather cardio should suppliment it.
