Whether rental amount is taxable.....
by Rajendra Barot on Jun 09, 2006 11:28 AM

I am a Government servant having accommodation facility. By GR, the State Government has decided to provide us free accommodation.

However, since at present due to non availability of free accommodation, after obtaining approval, at present I am staying at my headquarter in private bungalow. I used to pay Rs.2000/- p.m. as rent to the owner. The said amount of Rs.2000/- is being sanctioned by the government in my salary slip every month.

Whether the said rental amount of Rs.2000/- paid by me to the owner as rent, is considered as taxable amount?

I have to clarify that due to non availability of government accommodation, the competent authority has sanctioned the rent amount of Rs.2000/- per month which is paid in salary.

Please reply me individually if possible. Thanks.
