Reg non surgical treatment of fractures
by Dr.Ravi on May 06, 2005 03:16 PM

Sir,
I read ur artcile in rediff reg the treatment of fractures using herbs and eggs.Being an Orthopaedic surgeon,Iam bound to convey certain scientific facts regarding fracture treatment.
These ayurveda methods being used for more than 150 years might be true..but can it be proved that all fractures treated by Puthur casts unite without any deformity ????
The truth is ..these casts can be used for simple fractures and they do unite without any deformity.
But compound or communited fractures require surgical treatment for them to unite and that is the best option available.
In our tertiary centre..we come across a huge number of patients who have tried puthur casts and they return back to us with a deformity which has to be fixed internally/externally,otherwise leading to a permanent deformity and restricted/absence of movements. Moreover, there are incidence of maggots grown within the casts thereby adding more problem to the patient and the doctor.
The herbs and the eggs used for fracture healing are not useful in callus formation.
So it is a misconception that all fractures unite with puthur casts.
