DEAR RUKMANI, I AM A CAREER BANKER AND HAVE SPENT MORE THAN 36 YEARS IN SERVICE INDUSRY IN INDIA UNDERSTANDING AND INTERACTING WITH PEOPLE AS PART OF MY JOB-PROFILE.AFTER I TOOK VOL.RETIREMENT IN 2001,I HAVE BEEN A TRAINING CONSULTANT IN SOFT SKILLS AREA WITH A FEW CORPORATES.INVARIABLY,THEY HAVE NO TIME NOR INCLINATION TO PAY ATTENTION TO THEIR EMPLOYEES' SOFT SKILL TRAINING NEEDS SINCE TECHNICAL SKILLS/KNOWLEGE ALONE ARE ENOUGH TO KEEP THEIR ORGANISATION PROFITABLE,AS THEY BELIEVE.IGNORING THIS IMPORTANT ASPECT OF DEVELOPING SOFT SKILLS AMONG THEIR EMPLOYEES,THE ORGANISATION NORMALLY IS RUN CHAOTICALLY WITH HAPHZARD DECISION MAKING,HUGE COMMUNICATION GAPS ON VITAL ISSUES RELATING TO COMPANY'S BUSINESS,ALONGWITH COMPLETE DEMOTIVATION OF THE EMPLOYEES WITH NO OUTLET TO GIVE VENT TO THEM.THE CORPORATES,MOST OF THEM MANNED BY SO CALLED 'HR'PEOPLE,FAIL TO APPRECIATE THE FACT THAT THERE CAN NOT BE REAL PROGRESS/GROWTH OF THE COMPANY'S BUSINESS IN ABSENCE OF POLICY OF INSTITUTIONALISING THE TRAINING PROCESS IN THE COMPANY,ESPECIALLY TRAINING OF LOWER AND MIDDLE MANAGEMENT EMPLOYEES WHO RARELY GET SUCH TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES.FUNDS SPENT ON TRAINING OF EMPLOYEES MUST BE TREATED AS AN 'INVESTMENT' AND NOT 'EXPENDITURE'.
