I am shocked at how insensitive neighbours and friends can be. Ofcourse the author is too kind hearted to tick off such people but nonetheless who gave permission to such people to go nosing around in someone else's family matter. Sympathizing with the family would be an insult, so I wouldn't do that. However I do feel angry at the society. And having three elder sisters! Wow, would have been such fun!
