That was a mistake I would not commit

The story leaves a lot to imagine. The Friend in question is shown to be an unethical guy wanting to live on others money and enjoy somehow. Obviously the story on his mortagaging the family car was only a pretex to kick up emotions and extract help from relatives and friends.
The gap in the story, therefore, is how could the author ignore the negative sides of his Friend and still maintain him in his close circle of friends?
His question on what I would do under such a circumstance, is simple to answer. I will consider these points for my decision:
1. The money requested is within my means and its possible loss does not overtly concern me.
2. The friend who asks me for money is within my close circle, of good character and is not the kind to make me feel silly, as in the case of the Author.
3. The reason for me to help with money should be really worth to request a good friend. The type of story the friend of Author told does not make me sympathetic nor emotional. It is too weak to give any credence.
Lastly, if the friend cheats me, like in the story, that would be a precedence for me to tell all my friends that friendship and money should never be mingled.
