Re: is ur child a tube monster
by reetu on Dec 08, 2004 01:39 AM

Hi,

I am 26, and even I did not watch cable TV as a kid. But we did watch DD and my parents were okay with us watching serials, news, or movies, as long as studies dint suffer. In fact they were against the idea of enforcing a rule like 'do not watch TV, do not watch movies', because, according to them, such rigid rules force your kids to do things at your back and lie to you. And we were well groomed kids even without any rules. This does not imply that I wasnt a reader, I did read lots of books. Also, when I was in college, my parents were happy with the idea of me watching movies, because they feel that there is an age for everything and you should enjoy all things at some point in ur life. Reading books is not the beginning and end of life. My husband has watched cable TV ever since it was introduced in India, but still he reads more than me. So we cannot draw any conclusions the way author has drawn. Also, reading this article, I feel the author is forcing her ambitions/ways on her kids. You can make them do something, but cannot cultivate it as a habit. You are limiting their growth by not allowing them to discover their interests. TV isnt bad, u can restrict channels thou
