Captaincy skills of Dravid
by Neeraj Kumar on Sep 17, 2007 03:06 PM

Dravid was not a good captain. Just by winning the test series we cannot award him the tag of good captain. What was the Dravid's contribution as a captain in the victory? He took some terrible decisions and India won despite those decisions because it was a superior team.
Had there been any other captain would the result have been different? Yes. We would have won by 2-0 margin in tests and by 4-3 margin in ODIs. He not only lost the opportunity to win the series convincingly but he also gave England the confidence (which was looking as down and out till then) which was reflected in the ODIs.
Just remember the terrible decisions (other than not enforcing follow on) he took (like giving last over to Yuvraj.
There is apparent contradiction in Borde's answers. If not enforcing follow on was the collective decision of the team and captain should not be blamed then the next logical question comes (which the interviewer failed to ask) that how can the captain be praised for the series victory? Whole of the team should be praised as they take all important collective decisions.
Captaincy skills cannot be measured by number of victories. If you have a superior team you will win most of the times. The question should be asked whether the team's performance exceeded (or at least reached) its potential. Then only we can judge the real captaincy skills. In this case, we had a better team than England (as many of their main players were not playing) and we were expected to win both
