Icon-starved Bengal
by Vikram Ahmed on Mar 30, 2007 11:55 PM

There is no way Ganguly will face the heat in Kolkata like others will in rest of the country. NO WAY. He is treated as GOD in Kolkata. Just read the Bengali dailies "Anandabazar", "AajKaal", "Bartaman" etc and you will know what I am talking about.

And there is a reason behind it. There is no icon or role-model from Bengal in any sphere of life. Given the idle, averse to work nature of Bengalis, they therefore seek solace in the only one available in the horizon (Ganguly).

Look at the way Bengalis feel good about Amartya Sen (He is a British national), Sushmita Sen (hardly speaks Bengali), Rani Mukherjee (never lived in Bengal) among others.
They are habituated to feel good by proxy.
