Jaffer opens; Kumble goes first change
by Srinivas Bharadwaj on Oct 31, 2006 12:44 AM

Goign in with just 2 seamers pathan, and 2 spinners,

India should look to Kumble to go in first change

ahead of the third seamer and Harbhajan to attack

with spin. Around the 11th over with Powerplay, Kumble

needs to specialize in take a couple of wickets. The

reason is the fact that Pathan and Zaheer have proven

unreliable as openers often reducing pressure on

the batsmen. Reducing each to only 3 overs in the

first spell and relying on a double spin attack

through the middle overs might be the way to go. It maybe possible to slow down the first powerplay by 2 or 3 overs. Kumble is capable of pressuring the

batsmen early on.

Jaffer is a great call, given his great performance

in the test series in West Indies. Kaif too did well

in the one-dayers. Jaffer/Sehwag, Dravid, Tendulkar, Kaif, Dhoni is a good top order. With 2 spinners there

is no need for Mongia as a bowler. Pathan could also

pad up, were an early wicket to fall. Time is running

out. Raina is a great option for the 2011 world cup.

Chappell needs to step down. Zaheer needs to show

that he can be reliable and experienced. Pathan needs to concentrate on his bowling (first change)
