"Team names for the Super Eight stage are indicative based on the top two teams from the Group Stage qualifying. If these two teams do qualify they will be seeded in position 1 or 2 as specified regardless of whether they finish first or second in their group. For example, if South Africa wins Group A and Australia comes second, for the purposes of the Super Eights, South Africa will still be A2 and Australia will be A1. If, for example, Scotland qualifies instead of Australia, Scotland will become A1"

please read it carefully!

it does matter to me as i planned my stay in the caribbean basis or assuming india defeats srilanka and qualify as B1, as super 8 matches are played on different islands for b1 and b2. i dont know what to do know.

Then you made a blunder dude....read on

The marking A1& A2, B1& B2 etc are based on the rakings of the teams. As per the group B Rankings: Srilanka(#1), India(#2), Bangladesh(#3), Bermuda(#4).

Lets see few combinations:

If SriLanka and India qualify for super8 no matter who stands first in the group , Srilanka will be B1 and India will be B2.

If India and Bangladesh Qualify: India will be B2 and Bangladesh will take position of Srilanka: B1

If India & Bermuda qualify: India will be B2 and Bermuda will take position of Srilanka: B1

If SriLanka and Bangladesh Qualify: SriLanka will be B1 and Bangladesh will take position of India: B2

If Srilanka & Bermuda qualify: SriLanka will be B1 and Bermuda will take position of India: B2

If Bermuda and BanglaDesh Qualify: Bangladesh will be B1 as its ranked 3 in group and Bermuda will be B2 as its ranked #4.

The same holds true in all groups.

Got it guys???????

I got this link from one of the posting belo...see this as proof:

I read that article. I feel its realy bizarre. If India beats SL still they will be B2.This is not interesting at all.ICC should scrap that immediately and rank the teams based on their performance in the first round.

There is one simple but important reason why standings shouldn't be fixed (read - match fixing!) like the dimbulbs at icc have.. The grounds that each team will play at will change based on their standings! In the last WC a large part of the excitement was which team gets to play at which ground... Remember Cape Town and how no one wanted to play there due to the dew factor.. Now everyone knows where they play till the before the semis and will have too much time to prepare. The true test of a champion team should come when they have to adapt to conditions at short notice... Australia did this brilliantly in the last world cup.. So did India (obviously wasnt as good as the Aussies)..

It has always been the unpredictability factor that has kept us on the edges of our seats every four years... Alas! I fear this one will be as dull as dishwater. Congratulations ICC!

Now I guess the first round should be called as world cup qualifier than a WC. It is very absurd, I am very surpraused How this was not noticed by former players or commentators.

Whats the big issue??!!
by pavan karimbil on Mar 06, 2007 11:46 AM  Permalink

Lets get this straight guys, if India has to win the WC'07, we have to play everyone sometime or the other. We cannot hide behind formats so that we 'escape' playing this team or that team!

A WC winning team has to be prepared to meet any team and beat them. Have we worked out our strategy against every team? Are we singling out some danger men to see how we contain them or get them out??! How do we tackle, a Ponting, Pietersen, Symonds, Yussuf, Gayle, Lara, Jayasuriya. Or work our strategy against bowlers of the class of Murali, McGrath, Bond?? If we are confident of doing the above, half the battle is won!

One thing I am convinced, we have the talent, only it should all fire at the right time.....so by saying we will play X, Y or Z doesnt really matter. If we have to win the WC, we have to play each and every team.

And ladies and gentlemen, a thought for the minnows; I can guarantee you there will be a couple of surprises; so lets now put down our guard against the so-called lesser teams; cricket with all its glorious uncertainties will spring a couple googlies, hopefully we are not at the receiving end of these surprises!

Come one India!!
