I don't see anything wrong in seeing that the TV audience is kept in mind while designing the schedule. It has always been like this in every sport and will continue to be so. It's another matter whether we need so many teams and so many matches in a world cup.
the way world cup is scheduled all top 8 would play each other atleast once anyway..the only thing no one can predict who is playing with whom on what date unless those matches are fixed upfront...why dont rediff tell who will win the world cup then...its a joke ...

For once ICC keeps the conviniance of FANs in mind and this idiot has a problem with it. Get out of here man.
Well, India could be B1 or B2 and Pakistan could be D1 or D2 after the group stage. Chances are India will be B1 but not sure about Pakistan. But anyways, IT IS EITHER D2 v B1 ON APRIL 1, BI v D1 ON APRIL 18, B2 v D2 ON APRIL 19 AND B2 v D1 ON APRIL 15. COULD BE ANY OF THOSE 4. NOW PPL MAY ARGUE THAT ARPIL 1 AND APRIL 15 ARE SUNDAYS AND COULD BE INDIA VS PAKISTAN, BUT NOTHING CAN BE SAID WHEN IT REALLY IS. REPLY BELOW!!!! CHEERS!

It is not like that. B1 here does not mean the topper of Group B . Sri Lanka has been designated as B1 and India as B2. Even if India top the group and Sri Lanka come second, India will remain B2 and Sri Lanka B1. The schedule has been drawn up like that . The only difference will be that India will start with some points on the board if they manage to defeat SL. Similarly if SL defeat India and top the group and India qualify as second , SL will start with some points and India will start with 0. But the schedule still remains the same. The only difference will be if one of the minnows cause an upset and finish with more points than some heavyweight. Then the designation of the heavyweight will be taken over by the minnow and they will continue in the Super Eights.

Hello dear Amitava,
Who told you that India will remain B2 and Sri Lanka B1 irrespective of the result between the two. If you look at the ICC schedule (which incidentally the author of the article put a link to), the schedule for the Super 8s points out that the contestants of that particular match for e.g. B2 vs D1 are TBC (or to be confirmed). That how the Super 6 or 8 stage works, and thats how it was in the last 2 WCs. There would be no fun if each team knew who it was playing and where in this situation. The ICC would also have directly put down the the schedule as India vs Pak or SL vs WI whatever instead of B1 vs D2 etc

yes thats true. Why is Amitava saying India is b2 and sL b1. if they were given b1 or b2, they wouldn't write TBC in the super 8s. What if SL play worse than other playing nations in the group? I think Rediff has displayed a really stupid article.
This article is as bad as it can get. The writer does not understand the first thing about tournament rules, did not care to understand the complete schedule for the World Cup.
First of all -- Why is it important in tournamenets like these to seed a team as No. 1 or No. 2 at the end of a preliminary stage? It is only so that the winners of a group get a bonus for their win and get to play against the second team in another group - in other words, A1 plays B2 and B1 plays A2.
If every team plays against every other team anyway, what is the point in deciding A1, A2, B1, B2 after the preliminary stage??? The organizers could have as well named them Aus, Ind, Eng etc, but they have done so only because of the possibility that one(or some) of these teams may not qualify.
So this is not fixing as the article suggests, but makes more sense I would say. If this helps in scheduling important games better, then why not do it?
I hope there is a mention in the next couple of days saying that the person who wrote this article had no clue!!!!!!
Bangladesh pulled off perhaps the biggest shock ever in cricket with a five-wicket victory over world champions Australia in Cardiff on 18th June 05. This means they are capable of beating any team. So Mr Author, have you taken this fact into consideration. Please don't underestimate any team!!! You will never know who comes out as a dark horse.
This article is totally uncalled for and misdirected. 1. The group "ranking" is based on a seeding system decided in 2004 and that is how it happens for most of the major tournaments (tennis for example), so people who are planning their days can take into account. 2. There is still a possibility of minnows making it to the next round (everyone knows that). and that is only a bleak possibility, the whole cricket following world knows that. Should Federer be stopped from playing tennis as everyone knows he is most likely to win? 3. The website does not purport anything the author is attributing it to
On the whole, a highly irresponsible article and would serve rediff well to take it off

Rightly said. Who in this world would have predicted Kenya to play the Semi-Finals in 2003 worldcup. Any minnows can possibly be there.
I thnk rediff isn't gettin sum News 2 put on their website...nd moreovr hw can thy decide the events...thre r many possibilities, i mean Supereight matches depend on Group STANDINGS...nd hw can 1 decide the grp standin b4 WC gets on...
what a funny article..who the hell says india will be b2 and pakistan will be d1...the write better read inside out about cricket from cricinfo and then publish such a terrible article....absolute rubbish

True!!!INDIA will not reach semifinal,India may reach super 8.For India there is no chance of wining WC 2007.No need to ask any Astrologer.
I think this is premature thingking on the part of rediff. What in case if India looses to Sri Lanka in the Group stage. Rediff is creating unnecessary expectations among the Indian cricket fans and this is totally uncalled for.
