WAS THE INDIAN TEAM EVER MORE THAN AN AVERAGE TEAM EVEN DURING YOUR DAYS? ONCE EVEN YOU OPENED THE BOWLING!!!! THEN THE SPINNERS TOOK OVER.. A FEW MATCHES IN INDIA SAW SOME POSITIVE RESULTS. FROM ABROAD THE INDIAN TEAM ALWAYS RETURNED BLAMING THE UMPIRES/ THE PITCHES/ THE CROWDS/ THE VEGETARIAN DIET OF INDIANS ETC..BUT SELDOM A WIN... WAS THE INDIAN TEAM EVER AWARE OF WHAT IS DISCIPLINE? WHY COULD YOU NOT TAKE UP TO COACHING THE INDIAN TEAM IF YOU THOUGHT GREG CHAPPEL WAS NOT UPTO THE MARK. TODAY THERE IS NONE WILLING TO COACH THE INDIAN TEAM..EVEN YOU ARE RELUCTANT. THE BENCH STRENGTH OF INDIA IS NOT CALCULABLE AS THE BENCH IS EMPTY..THERE IS NO YOUNGSTER IN THE CALIBER OF MIKE HUSSEY OR SHAUN TAIT OR THE HUNDREDS AVAILABLE IN AUSTRALIA. MY REQUEST IS THAT "PLEASE FOLLOW THE GOLDEN RULE..SILENCE IS GOLDEN" IF YOU CANNOT STEM THE RIVER FOR PRODUCTIVITY SO SHALL IT BE..BUT DO NOT DIRTY IT . GREG CHAPPEL WAS THE BEST THAT COULD HAPPEN TO INDIA..BUT JUST LIKE OUR ERSTWHILE MINISTERS SCOFFED AWAY LEE KWAN YIU'S SEZ PROPOSAL ABOUT 25 YEARS AGO AND CHINA TOOK ADVANTAGE OF IT, THE SAME FATE AWAITS INDIAN CRICKET

Ramachandran,It's so sick to see people like you always blaming Christians for every wrong in this country and now you have got this stuff into cricket too. What's wrong in being a Christian? They dominate all world sports today and have been doing so in the past. Moreover, anything and everything that has benifitted mankind has come from the Christians. Chappel may have had his faults but you must remember that he was selected by a selection board set up by the BCCI, which desperately needed some cleansing and direction in the Indian cricket team at that point of time. And also to blame him for all the problems is not right. When did India ever dominate world cricket like te West Indians or the Australians? We may have won the world cup in 1983 but we were thrashed in the series after that in India by the West Indians. The only achievement worth mentioning was the ICC World Series we won in 1985 in Australia, otherwise every other tournament has been a big failure.

"even Ireland would defeat aus if Greg too over as the crciket academy head" reeks of personal vendetta!! what is Gavaskar trying to say?? That India is a hopeles team cos of Greg Chappell?? Sunny got it wrong there!!

I completely disagree. If you question Gavaskar's credentials about commenting about Indian cricket - I disagree - there is none more qualified. About India's performance during his tenure, India was the top team in the world in 1983, and then again in 1985 - so your statement that it was never better than Australia does not hold. His observation that Indian team went downhill after Greg Chappell took over is true - we were dreaming of winning the world cup then. I guess you got your knowledge of cricket, logic, sense of humour and English all wrong.

Supriyo, i agree with you! but for Gavaskar to make uncharitable comments about Greg Chappell and challenging his credentials as coach is a bit out of place!!

Mr. Ramchandran has said "GREG CHAPPEL WAS THE BEST THAT COULD HAPPEN TO INDIA", only this sentence is enough to describe your sate of mind, sir. After having a humiliating world cup campaign and so many (like 4-0 loss to South Africa in ODI) guru Greg is really the best thing to ruin Indian cricket. In today result oriented world nobody is spared, guru Greg should be dumped from coaching for rest of his life. Please do not write in CAPS to a person who scored not less than 700 in his first test series in West Indies. Please learn to respect the one of the 3 alltime best players of India in test cricket.

Please don't use all capital letters, it's equivalent to shouting and it's very hard to read. It's just a suggestion, I am not criticising you.
I was wondering what happen to Mr Gavaskar, i was wondering, the so called greatest batsman which I always doubt, this gentleman is also earning lot of money in the name of Indian cricket and we indians are listening his unproductive writings, I never saw India challenging australia in world cricket, but our so called sunny gavaskar saw it, may be he was dreaming. Mr. Gavaskar, india team has got ur blue eye boys like Sachin and Saurav, do you think they need Chappel to guide them. Gavaskar stop hurting damaging indian criekt, you have done sufficient harms, now why don't you stop these, for god sake stop ur tamasa. Chappel will be treated with higher respect by world cricket community, so no point barking Mr Hypocrate.

We had a chance to beat Australia in the WC2003. Tendulkar, Gavaskar's favorite batsman and the next Don Bradman, did not even make a fifty let alone try to make one.
You can only take a horse to the pond, you cannot make it drink water. You can only tell the players to improve their run up, batting stance, coordination, you cannot put the spirit in them to fight for their country.
Tendulkar in particular needs a session with Javed Miandad to know what playing for the country means.

Ya, Suresh, you are perfectly right. Making the coach responsible for the debacle is idiocy. If we lost then its because our batsmen, bowlers and fielders could not perform when they were required to. Not because the coach was not good.
But we all should understand that there are periods when teams are not able to perform. But in case of India its quiet long time since they have stopped performing. Lets hope now we include some fresh talent in the team who have the zeal to take the Indian team to top.
What he says is very true. Even if one looks at management principle 'Management by Results' Chappel should go. To elaborate, he had enough powers to influence selection and hence he also should be a party to take 5 to 6 openers to World Cup sacrificing middle order, dropping Dravid to lower down the order, destabilizing the batting further.
He might not have done it intentionally but the results were devastating. Whether the other players played to true to their role or not and should go or retained is another topic of discussion.
