Support - not abuse
by Nav on Apr 07, 2007 06:22 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

It is easy to sit and be an arm-chair 'expert'. Yes, the world cup exit was a disaster - but to us its only a game - to them its their lives, so spare a thought to the players. What this country needs is unity and to support the team in time of crisis... Blaming Tendulkar is not going to help. There are 10 other players who could have put their hands up. In fact blaming anyone is not going to help - abuse isn't the answer... its only going to make things worse. Lets unite and hope for the best from indian cricket - instead of abusive messages hurled to players/coach etc.

How can we 'spare' them when those fools lose to minnows? That too, after getting paid in lakhs?

Stats - broken down further
by R K on Apr 07, 2007 12:11 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

This is a good article. Even though we win or lose as a team, much has been said about stats. While we are at that topic, lets divide Sachin's stats against different countries...hmmm

OK. Can you bring any other player who has performed well than Tendulkar in these conditions? Soit implies that Tendulkar is the best player that india can produce. You have to understand that.

Sachin - Double game !
by Cedric Vaz on Apr 06, 2007 10:57 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

A couple of years back, Sanjay Manjrekar (former cricketer & team mate) had exposed the duplicity of Sachin Tendulkar !
But we did not pay heed to Sanjay & only sided with Sachin in a biased manner. Now that Chappell has once again exposed him (Sachin), I hope the powers that be drop him from the team for talking to the media in his own interest instead of letting his bat do the "talking".
Senior players of the team should not depend on motivation from the coach, board officials or the public. They would do well to place the game & the country's honour before themselves always !

Cricket will remain a religion, but Tendulker is no more a God
by Vinish Puravankara on Apr 06, 2007 10:29 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

It is time to rethink. The Men In Blue are already back after the picnic.

A batting line-up that includes the big trio(having over 35000 odd runs to its credit) have failed twice to score 200. Thr GOD failed to score a single run in the crusial match, in the world cup which he said earlier is the most important world cup in his career. Against the minnows Bermuda, he roared like a lion. But the very next match proved he is a big zero in all.

A century in each and every match he plays is not expected of him. What we expect is a winning knock when it is most demanded. He has rarely done that. Think howmany of his 40 ODI centuries and 35 test centuries have come when Team India demanded them?

Dravid - The wall. Is he a match winner? What leadership qualities does he have?(Even Sourav was a better leader). After 1996 semi against Srilanka, all the blame was put on Azharuddin on electing to field first(Remember - That decision was suggested by all including selection committee, former cricketers and even some goverment officials! - Poor Azhar) Now what about Dravid's decision on batting first against Bangladesh?

Poor Azharuddin and Jadeja were scapegoats of match fixing. Now the so-called Men In Blue are making crores without achieving anything for Team India!

Further, what makes Harbhajan stand top of Anil Kumble? Mr. Bhajji is still in Indian team because of that series against Australia more than five years ago! After that count the number of matches(Test/ODI) that he has won for India.....

Kumble, who is one of the rare cricketers who offers 100% to the team was never given justice. In 2003, he took four wickets in the first match against Netherlands, and had a spell of 7-1-21-1 in the next match where Aussies cruched India by nine wickets scoring 125 in just 20 overs. But Kumble was not played in the next matches. With such an injustice shown to its one great player, how a team wins the cup? They failed miserably in the final. Now the story repeats....

Kumble is the biggest match winner that India has seen so far. Statistics says that. Can you compare a century by a batsman and a five wicket haul by a bowler? (A century where a batsman has opportunity to make loads of runs, is no way equal to a five wicket haul by a bowler where five bowlers can share only 10 wickets) However if you compare these efforts, of the 35 centuries of Tendulker only 15 had resulted in India's win whereas of his 30 five wicket hauls, Kumble has produced 18 Indian victories. Everyone is blaming that he is not performing well abroad. But why dont they see the other side of it - Who in Indian team is performing better abroad? Batting, they rarely score a 300 total. What a bowler can do with such totals to back him? In the series against Aussies and Pak in 2004 where Indian batsmen had good run(Remember it was Laxman who was key in that) Kumble proved that he can win matches abroad too.

But Kumble was never given any importance/publicity as Sachin or even Dravid. This is because he is not a celebrity. In Indian team, you need to be a celebrity. This is what happened with Laxman and Kumble -They failed to establish themselves as celebrities.

Everyone used to compare Pele and Tendulker. But Pele is not remembered for his 1000 goals, but he had won more than one world cup for his team. Comparing him where stands Tendulker? Sir Don bradman once said Tendulker is next to him. Now in heaven he must have felt ashamed of it.

Tendulker is no more a force in international cricket. He should think of retirement now. Or atleast he should take a long rest and learn quality cricket to win matches by watching Lara, Ponting, Hayde, Jayasuriya etc and seeing how they win matches.

It is also time for others like Dravid, Sehwag, Harbhajan etc to think seriously about retirement. When one is no more able to win matches, automatically he should be out of the scene.

But my friends, these things are never going to happen. These waste chemicals will continue to be the main ingredients of Indian cricket. The master blaster, Tendulker will continue to hit centuries against the minnows, take his tally to 20000 or even more, Wicketless Harbhajan will continue to be India's spearhead(Because he turns the ball!), With lot many holes, Dravid will continue to be called the great WALL, Sehwag will continue to decorate the Indian top order, though for one or two balls, We the poor supporters will remain foolish idiots.

Pass on this for the sake of people who wasted their time offering prayers, doing poojas for the good of Indian cricket.

-Vinish

Teamwoek
by R K on Apr 06, 2007 07:57 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

You can get the best 11 players in the country. 5 Excellent batsmen, 5 best bowlers, a couple best all rounders. Best left-arm, right arm combinations. All the them very fit fielders and the best wicket keeper.

Still, if they can't function as a team, if they bring their own agendas into the field, if they don't make and follow a team strategy, if they fight for the batting or the bowling order, if they don't have that fight in them, if all of them think that they are the best leader, and if they are not managed well, they will lose to a minnow again.

A team is better off with a great teamwork of above average players, than with excellent players with bigger ego.

My two cents.

well we lost need not worry. the time is now to think what next. in my view nothing can a coach do because he cannot play strokes like SACHIN did and got out or how SEHWAG played . we should be sportive and should look into the future. we donot have cricket structure at the root level .i agree with what ZEE has said we should have a difficult level of ceicket and should select a team without any favouratism. BCCI is just being professional in creating funds and making money. it has not developed any plan as to how cricket should be developed in INDIA. we should be ashamed that we cannot produce quality cricketers from 1 arab population. secondly cricketers should be banned from doing adds as they are already getting hefty money from the game

Dear Mr Pradeep,
Do not u think that this is a CREATED DRAMA by ZEE and BCCI just to divert the mind of indian cricket fans from the poor performance in the world cup???

How ZEE or anyone can even think to start such a big league without having basic nfrastructure EVEN GROUNDS ???

It is a very politicised comedy with the cricket and with the emotions of the fans

Till date, BCCI have not taken any serious step to uplift the performance, is it???

Regards

Ok, Tendulkar b Fernando for zero. Get over it. India didn't make it through. Everyone is disappointed. Although it was a good ball, Sachin missed it - but thats not the end of the world. Im sure he'll bounce back - I dont think you realize how privileged we are as a nation to have a superstar sportsman until he leaves. Im not asking for him to be touted as a God or a player who makes a 100 every innings - but let the man have some peace. He too must be extremely disappointed - much more than anyone here.
