Best Final ever?
by T KRISHNAN on Jul 07, 2008 02:45 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The game was supposed to be played on grass, wherein we normally see serve and volleying. Yesterday, the game was between a baseliner (Rafa) and a fairly good serve and volleyer. In terms of strength and stamina exhibited, it could be termed as a good match to see. But the best ever??
Go back to 1990 when Stefan Edberg beat Boris Becker (both were very good serve and volleyers)in 5 fast paced, thrilling sets, with rushes to the net by both players, the lobs that were sashayed, the drop shots played so smoothly and effortlessly.... That was a far better match than this in terms of quality of grass court tennis exhibited.
If you ask the previous generation, they will talk about the great matches featuring persons such as John Newcombe, Rod Laver, Roy Emerson, and others who were wonderful grass court players.
Yesterday's match was an extension of Paris, with a different surface. That's about all.

hi,
i agree the edberg-becker match was one of the best. but the important point here is that rafa did not allow roger to come to the net. that is his achievement on grass. whether the greatest ever, dont know cos roger seemed a bit off colour with half the sting in his shots that they normally have.

Was Nadal Federor match best final?
by arun on Jul 07, 2008 02:44 PM  Permalink

I think the two consecutive finals between Machenro and Borg were equally good.

This Man is an Icon of Calmness, Composure and Strength.

He always plays in the true spirit of Game.

Though he lost the match...he is still the "Undisputed Champion" coz of his Cooool nature. He would definately capture 5 more Wimbeldon Championships.....

the best ever men's final for sure... but i guess overall the best wimbledon final is that between steffi and arantha sanchez some time in 98 or 99 where one of the games in final set went on for 40 dueces... two equally talented ibdividuals same as yesterday

Was Federer vs Nadal the best final ever?

I think the Ivanisevic and Rafter final would come close. The McEnroe and Borg final of 1980 was also a classic. But still yesterday's match was better than both these ones.
