Federer is capable delivering Higher capability
by Vinay on Jul 07, 2008 07:00 PM  Permalink

I thought federer was not playing his best tennis in the final. Otherwise he is a class player of different level all together.

Nadal is great player but federer is surely the master of game. Federer has the champion attitude which kept him going though he was down and not in his best form.

Nadal has played great tennis and probably is in best form of his life. But still i think it appears to me that this final is "Federer's loss" more than "Nadals Victory".
The emperor certainly requires a refreshing break than whole lot of criticism built over him over past few weeks.

It was one of best finals surely because of the champion will power of the federer and relentless challenge by fierce Nadal. But i would rate wimbledon 2007 final Federer vs Nadal as the better final than this final because Both players played aggressively with equal hunger for glory and in their prime forms!

The top three Wimbledon Finals
by parthasarathy sarathy on Jul 07, 2008 06:18 PM  Permalink

Undoubtedly, the first spot goes to the Borg - McEnroe final of 1980. The 1988 Women's French final between Steffi Graf and Natalia Zvereva lasted just 32 minutes whereas the fourth set tie break alone in the 1980 B - M Final lasted 25 minutes. As McEnroe took that fourth set on the 34th point in the tie break - yes, 34th point - Borg came back in the fifth set, served bullets, pulled everything extra to shut out the mercurial and the one and the only John McEnroe. That one set proved that Borg can serve and volley tremendously if pushed to the wall by a genius like McEnroe. That he was rarely pushed was a different matter.

The second spot goes to yesterday's final. Consider this: Nadal serves 5 - 4 in the fourth set tie break, rushes to the net, punches a good (but not good enough) forehand volley that takes Federer wide off the court on his deuce court, the whole of his court is open, what does he do? He whips a sharply angled backhand cross court that passes Nadal but lands in the centre of the court. That one weak punch by Nadal delayed his victory by over one hour. Many shots played by Nadal and Federer yesterday could not even have been imagined by most of the other players in the circuit today. These two are a class apart.

The last of the three Edberg - Becker finals was a great serve and volley contest but it was not so theatrical as the other two. The sensation about that final was defeating Becker in a five set match which was generally not done.

mate..that was harsh.....if a player does not do well in half a year or a quarter less than a year....there are calls that he shud retire....one has to understand that fedex will not win each and everytime....if he does that..he will end up with 30 slams...that's not humanly possible....he will still play and still win slams....yes he has lost but i think a loss at SW19 was necessary for him seeing the pressure that he had taken on himself to win the 6th consecutive SW19 final. next time he ll come back refreshed and hungry..

Not the best, but close.
by dumbeldor on Jul 07, 2008 05:15 PM  Permalink

There were some classic shots, but it was a baseline slugfest for most of the time. Service ruled with very few breaks. It became counted as a "classic" simply because Federer came back from 2 sets down to take it to the fifth. That too on very few well-played points in the tie breakers.

Some of the best:
2001 - Ivanisevic, wildcard, thrice runner up, fighting tears while serving out the match, finally overcoming Patrick Rafter in 5 sets 6–3, 3–6, 6–3, 2–6, 9–7
1990 - Edberg bt Becker, classic serve and volley match 6–2, 6–2, 3–6, 3–6, 6–4
1980 - Borg bt mcenroe, classic old v new match, the old holding on for his 5th straight till mcenroe bt him next year 1-6 7-5 6-3 6-7(16) 8-6

amazing match
by chelsea on Jul 07, 2008 04:36 PM  Permalink

As a federer fan, it was sad that he didn't win but it was a great match. Nadal has been trying so hard and he deserved it.
This loss I think which fed in his own words said hurt a lot more than french is probably the best thing to happen to him. He'll now work extra hard to beat nadal. Who knows, fed might now beat nadal in the french next year.
The tennis pundits have been saying for a while now that Rafa will win wimbledon before fed wins french. Well, rafa won wimbledon, lets see if fed can fulfill the other half.

Federer is Still the King
by Rajesh on Jul 07, 2008 04:34 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Iam a fan of Federer, I still wonder when Federer plays against anyone he is so cool and demolises everyone in straigh sets, but when it comes to playing against Nadal there is some pressure on both. I would say its the same with Nadal also and lets accept the fact this is one of the best Tennis Rivalries.

Federer did not convert any of the points which can be converted as winning points and that clearly shows the pressure. Its purely my views if anywould have watched the style and perfection of game, Federer was more ahead of Nadal.

Congrats Nadal for ur wimbledon crown and me being a fan of Federer, I would still say Federer is the Emperor of Tennis in this Era.

Is Federer the best
by chichoo badrinath on Jul 07, 2008 04:30 PM  Permalink

Is Federer the greatest player of all time ahead of Laver & Sampras? It is a question yet to be answered.

The best final in the modern era
by Ranga on Jul 07, 2008 04:09 PM  Permalink

Looking at Wimbledon finals in the last 25 years, this final is definitely the best though the final between Edberg and Becker (1990) can also be considered for top spot. This final beats previous ones by the quality and complexity of few points played by both the players.
