Micheal Phelps is beyond words. A single man targetting 8 golds in olympics itself speaks of his dedication to his game. When our country, in its 60 years of existence, has just produced only one individual gold winner, and here is a man who is just collecting gold after gold as if it is childs play, speaks volumes about where is he and where we are !!!! Amazing by any standards.
Just as the person scoring maximum total marks in any examination is declared First in rank, irrespective of the fact that he might have scored less marks than others in some subjects, Phelps is the I rank holder because he has scored maximum medals. Hence he is the greatest of all till now.

In Hindu Mythology it is clearly written that a man called "Veer Bahu" will be the first man to land on the Moon and when we think abt it is really Arm Strong (Man with strong Hands)

Yeah Yeah Now even the Gods are tired of being born in India. I would agree to that. But the forum for this useless piece of information is actually something like "Useless Pulp Fiction Trivia"
Phelps is phenom...yes...no doubt about that....the greatest olympic swimmer...yes....and if he breaks Spitz's record beyond boubt......but he cannot be called the greatest olympian for 2 reasons
1. Different sports have different criteria - many dont have so many medals that an individual can win so doesnt mean the others are less great....
2. Longlivity - to be greatest olympian i would say you must have unmatched longlivity like Carl Lewis who won medals in 4 olympics....that is what the olympics is about strength of mind and body and endurance.

I think Phelps will probably be there for another Olympics at least. The debate on who is the greatest will always be there - let me give you one big reason he can be considered the greatest Olympian 1. No of golds in multiple events in a short timeframe. Each swimming stroke and distance is now a specialist art with swimmers focusing exclusively on one event (100 M Butterfly ex)- the range of events shows Phelps swimming prowess. The main point is the ability to do so many races and heats in a short time. His specialist opponents are usually much better rested between events than he is (2 days vs sometimes 40 mins). He still blows them out of the water. All his peers, opponents etc admit that he is a once in a century athlete. Its easy for folks to say that he wins just because he has more events - its a very difficult and incredible feat to accomplish. That's why Carl Lewis's four golds in a single Olympics is considered a great feat.

The basic of all the games is same. Strong determination, perseverance, physical and mental fitness and strength, dedication etc. No matter what is the form of the sport, the winner is always a winner and a loser like you will always remain a loser.
I can not say about techniques of his event. But ofcourse he is great!!! What a consistant performance in GOLD in every Olympic. Hats off to him. Great Performer!!!!!!!!!!!

leaving aside the differences, shouldn't we be thinking of training our Virdhawal Khade and Sandeep Sejwal at the same academy where Michael Phelps / Ian Thorpe trained. The boys have promise and the age is at their side. The money required fot ir could be sponsored by one of the industrialists. What say?
Really he is a magic boy & Total 11 medals he has won till dt in Olympics, i think we as Indian's should meet him & take his interview, as we waste our time by taking interview of Our Politicians & i am confident if he gets ready to give interview (exclusive) to Indian Media then our Sports person can learn a lot & may be we can win more medals
