gifted..but not great yet!!

Phelps has unusal physical features and for some biological reason he also tires the least as proved by recent scientific measures...this surely helps him comete better than his peers...he is at the right sport and the right time and has definitley combined it with disciplined approach to achieve wht he has done...

Of course his 12 golds and probably much more considering he is only 23 is no joke but then u cannot ignore his gifts which he has in plenty...greatness is deomonstrated with you achieve more with less and when u rise again after a fall...Phelps at this point has too much going for him we have to wait till the point when some of his gifts start to deteriorate he can then prove his greatness as well

"greatness is deomonstrated with you achieve more with less and when u rise again after a fall..."Agree with you there... to me Jesse Owens is the best, considering the barriers he had to overcome

a swimmer and bagful of medals.
by vinay on Aug 15, 2008 12:52 AM  Permalink

a swimmer has got many options/events to get the medals to his tally.
to compare swimming medals with that of other sports is like comparing runs and wkts in cricket.
a batsman can overtake score, say 100 or even 200 runs (in odis, say). but a bowler cannt take more than 10 wkts in an inning.
batsman getting 100 runs.

so, swimming sports is such that there r many events which can fetch u a medal unlike other sports. so dont compare a swimmers' medal tally with that of other athletes.

He was great for the aussies, but I don't think he was not close to being an all time great... I gues since the time of Matt Biondi, it has to be phelps....

by Coomi Selod on Aug 14, 2008 09:36 PM  Permalink

So often in recent times one gets excited about such an athlete, only much later to learn that he /she tested positive and medals returned...
Hope we are not disappointed by this new phenomenon
