I agree. I'd love to participate in the olympics.. and visit some parts of china post-olympics or once my event gets over.

Good article.. Getting medals is more important but participating is also required.. In fact, its a necessary pre-requisite to getting any medals :-)

The Indian outlook
by Rakesh Vankina on Aug 05, 2008 09:49 AM  Permalink

I agree with the article. We like to be led and not lead. Else we would'nt have ended up with the general lethargic public participation on any issue that effects us. any. We conveniently put it on karma without actually doing anything.

Indian mindset
by Tom Dick on Aug 05, 2008 09:46 AM  Permalink

Indians are very good in claiming honours when an Indian goes abroad and settle there and then achieve something great. Eg. Sunitha Williams etc. We have no funds to encourage sports people but we have more than enough for officials and ministers to go and watch Olympics. See todays news a large number of officials and minister is off to China from Kerala. Athlets are crying for a track to practice and there is no money!!!

Why India is required to participate in Olympic ?
by Raja Ravan on Aug 05, 2008 09:44 AM  Permalink

India is not required to participate in olympics. Why so much crores of Rs to spend ? Is it not better we should utilize that money in other area. We are paying lot of Tax and see the Roads of Mumbai. What a third class City is this now. I feel shame when foreigners who comes here and talks to me about their country.

One foreigner from Germany told me once (he was working in same organization) that Indians like third class and people are here having all time double standard.

So better we should make our infrastucture good than think of prticipating in Olympic otherwise foreigners will again say there that Look Indians (T type) have come.

We can always claim other people's success as our own.
by Kes Som on Aug 05, 2008 09:39 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

India has mastered the art of claiming other people's success as its own. I read an Economic Times article yesterday that "BRIC" countries medals tally has gone up by 5x in 2 decades (or some such number). The fact is that China's tally has gone up, so has Russia's, and to some extent Brazil. But we are happy to label this as "BRIC" success.

Similarly, you will find Indian media tom-toming the success any person with a bit of Indian genetic lineage. We have claimed Vijay Singh (golf), Sunita Williams, etc as our own.

If Sunita Williams live in India she never had chieved this. Kalpana Chawla was a great personality its only because that she is was in the US. Where you live and brought up does matter. But our media will publicise like anything just because she is an Indian origin. Indian media is sick and shit. They are hungry for any rotten news.

we have right political system but managed by wrong people.... if we compare their wisdom of governace as compared... I feel that the outcome are not same as cmpared to other nation....it is not a question of efficiency but the right wisdom.....I request all political leaders to take ownership of this ... and they should accept their failure...i suggest for each goverment there should be a session that.... what they didn't deliver at the end of the show.........

As long as Kalmadi continues to be the head of Olympic committee, dont expect any surprises...Corruption is mantra and favouritism is the key word...

Yes. Ten years ago Kalmadi was saying that he was doing the groundwork and targetting a large medal haul in 2008 olympics. In the last ten years the sports situation hasnt improved, so one wonders where the 100s of crores have been spent.
