No Hope for India
by shantanu ghosh on Aug 04, 2008 05:28 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The same old saga will repeat this year too. Mr. Srinivasan's report is fully correct. We Indians lack the will to win. Although we claim Cricket to be our religion, we are not even no.1 in that sport too, which is properly played by some 8-9 odd countries. Shame on us!! Inspite of all this we bark "CHAK DE INDIA"

Shantanu,Where were you before Olympic ????

The Indian public / Indian sponcers all are busy appreciating criket... Sports Minister
(Criket Minster) only had a time for criket.

When School children represent respective states for C.K.Naidu Criket tourment they were accomodated in luxury hotel and all other facilities. But when athletes represent respective states for School National / Inter State / Inter university athletic meet they were accomodate in some vaccate school with an advise to use only floor to sleep.

There is no encourgement... athletes with gold medal are recruited by para military / defence force as NCO ( Soldier cadre ) with megree salary where as criket players appointed as Bank officers.

For this pathetic situation of athletic and other sports all India public / sponcers / goverment everybody is responsible.

This article is wrong... and don't talk about number of Indian population when Olympic comes. INDIANS !! CONCENTRATE FOR CRIKET AND CRIKET... SINCE YOU HAVE NO RESPECT FOR OTHER SPORTS.. SO DON'T DEMAND...

Sports today is a means of geting rich. With the growing economy, disposable income and smaller families, more and more Indian Parents are encouraging a sporting activity for their kids. However, the problem now is the rising cost of real estate, making open spces, especially in metros, dearer and scarcefor both the rich and poor.. Also, the scourge of Cricket that devours all sports. We should have a system that allows heavy corporate subsidy for investment in Olympic Sports.

Different people raise the same issue repeatedly without analysing the fact then it is better to cut paste below their points to make understand to have the power to accept the fact.

Don't care
by cva on Aug 04, 2008 05:22 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I don't think we are insecure like some countries in asia where in we measure our self worth based on medal tallies or what others think. that insecurity is rooted around smaller physical stature of some asiatics. Yao Min is a hero in China and Tendulkar, not the "Great Khali" is the hero in India. We are unlike the west because our culture so far doesn't revolve around self aggrandizement. If we were to win any medals in olympics, we would have to develop a "mujhse badkar kaun hai" society. we are getting there. We will never win by mimicking an east asian mindset because we dont care about what westerners think of us.

great article

Rajeev you are right in pointing out that we lack initiative and strategic intent. Here I would like to mention that like hockey where we faded out slowly as the world picked up hockey similar fate will come to cricket when China, USA and others will start taking cricket seriously. May be after next 20 years you will write India fails to qualify in cricket for Olympics. Here I would like to remind everybody that in 1952 Asian games India won the Gold medal and now we are placed at 133rd position. This will keep happening if we mix politics with sports. all sports federations like Hockey, football, cricket fedaretions are headed by dirty politicians.
India badminton coach asked for the same shuttle which will be used during Beijing Olympics and sports ministry took more than 11 months to provide.

A few years back when the Saudi officials were marching on the opening ceremony in Japan Olympics, the commentator said" saudi Arabia has never won any medal any time nor are they terribly worried about it".India is perhaps one step better. There is too much Bollywood craze in India. People do not play any sports. Most of them are couch potatoes. How do you expect support for sports from such a bunch. India does not even have stray dog free walking paths for people who want to jog.

Fair Play !!

Countries like Estonia and Azerbaijan won medals at the last Olympics. What great leadership or motivation possibly exists in such tiny places ??
Our problem is CORRUPTION. People bribe and pay to make it to the Olympic outing, and deserving athletes get left out of the team.

You are wrong. India has 60% non vegetarians. That is sizable number. The best tennis player India had ever produced Ramanathan Krishnan is a vegetarian. Most of the olympic champions have been trained under a secretive steroid program. China excells in it.The truth comes out in some cases after they won the medal. many are not even caught.

bash vegetarianism. Next bash Hinduism. People with so much inferiority complex. Olympics is lot of BUllshit. Athletes use steroids. The way the Gymnastic team trains is almost child abuse. India has other needs like clean water and sanitation before olympic medals. I think Saudis and Islamic countries have right attitude about olympics. BTW saudis are not vegetarians. What do you say for that?
